Outdoor Living Trends Ohio Homeowners Are Investing In

The Backyard as a Living Space

The way Ohio homeowners think about their backyards has shifted meaningfully. What used to be primarily a lawn maintenance obligation is increasingly viewed as an extension of the home's livable square footage, and homeowners are investing accordingly.

Multi-Level Decks

Single-level decks have been replaced by multi-level designs in many newer projects. A lower level that transitions to grade-level with a patio connection creates natural zones for different activities (dining, lounging, cooking) without the space feeling cluttered. Multi-level decks also handle sloped yards elegantly, turning a challenging grade into a design feature.

Covered Structures That Enable Year-Round Use

Ohio's shoulder seasons (spring and fall) are genuinely beautiful, and covered outdoor structures extend how much of the year families actually use their outdoor spaces. Pergolas with retractable canopies, pavilions, and screened enclosures are all seeing strong demand.

A screened-in porch or three-season room adds functional square footage at a fraction of the cost of a fully conditioned addition. For families who prioritize outdoor living, the value-to-cost ratio is excellent.

Outdoor Kitchens

Outdoor kitchen installations have grown from a luxury feature to a mainstream request. Permanently installed grills, side burners, refrigerators, and prep counters, often built into masonry or composite cabinetry, transform outdoor cooking from a seasonal activity into a genuine kitchen extension.

Simpler outdoor kitchen builds start around $5,000–$10,000. Full outdoor kitchens with high-end appliances, pergola cover, and bar seating can reach $40,000+. Most of our clients land in the $12,000–$25,000 range with a solid built-in grill, counter prep space, refrigerator, and overhead structure.

Fire Features

Fire pits, both wood-burning and gas, have become a near-universal request in backyard projects. Gas fire tables and built-in fire pits integrate cleanly into patio designs and extend the season for outdoor gatherings well into October and November in Ohio's climate.

Thoughtful Lighting

Landscape and deck lighting has improved dramatically in quality and come down significantly in price. Low-voltage LED systems can now be integrated into deck framing, stair risers, pergola structures, and landscape beds, transforming how an outdoor space looks and functions after dark. Clients who add lighting consistently rate it among the best decisions of their outdoor project.

Planning for Ohio's Climate

The freeze-thaw cycle, heavy precipitation, and temperature swings of Ohio's climate require material choices made with durability in mind. Composite decking, powder-coated aluminum railings, porcelain tile (rated for exterior use), and properly sealed concrete or natural stone all perform well here. We see more callbacks and repairs on outdoor projects where materials were selected for appearance alone without considering Ohio-specific weather performance.
